General Information

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department of Baskent University was established in 2001. It is located at Faculty of Dentistry close to the Baskent University, Faculty of Medicine, in Bahçelievler. Currently, 2 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 3 Assistant Professor, 3 Fellow and 2 Research Assistants are working at the department as full-time. The decisions related with the Department are made by the Department Committee which is composed of all faculty members of the Department. The Department is governed by the chairman and a deputy chairman.

Along with postdoctoral programme, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department plays role in the undergraduate programme of Faculty of Dentistry since 2006-2007 academic year. Although education is primarily in Turkish, dental literature is being discussed in English.

In Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, after 5 year dental education, 4 year PhD program with theoric and practical courses carried out. Practitioners complete their rotation programme in the department of otorhinolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, anesthesia and reanimation as a part of their education. The practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) involves treatment in many clinical settings including private dental clinic, outpatient surgical centers, and total patient care in a hospital setting.
The PhD program of oral and maxillofacial surgery covers a broad area dealing with the diagnosis and management of many types of abnormalities and esthetic concerns of the face and jaws. Treatment of these conditions includes management of congenital facial anomalies such as jaw deformities related to cleft lip and palates and abnormal growth of facial bones. Preprosthetic surgery and implant surgery at the advanced level are within the scope of OMFS. OMFS also encompasses extractions, treatment for traumatic injuries to the face and jaws, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, pathology, and reconstruction of the facial bones after trauma or surgery.
