LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Explains the basic principles and concepts on which character design is based.
2) Knows professional terms and presentation standards in character design.
3) Uses the knowledge of form, composition, line and value learned in the basic design course in a character design.
4) Designs characters according to the content.

COURSE DEFINITIONThe aim of this course is to create digital characters to be used in mass communication, especially in the digital media environment, and to experience the use of these characters in their projects as the main element of communication. Traditional and digital environments are used to learn the basic principles and concepts on which character design is based, and to give the character a visual identity.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Information about the course is given. Successful character design examples are examined. How observations can be transferred to character design is discussed.
2nd Week The principles of using basic shapes and colors in a character design are explained. Students design a character from abstract shapes and lines.
3rd Week Basic design principles are shown in character design. The importance of shapes in personality creation is discussed. Students design a character from office supplies.
4th Week Personality, character analysis, general scenario, film style and how to reflect these to the design are discussed. Students bring a drawing of the people around them and a small description of the character.
5th Week Character designs are discussed through body language, pose, composition, visual association and other design elements. The importance of drafts and character development are discussed.
6th Week Students bring the character design they have prepared based on the drawings and descriptions. Points to be considered in the design of people and animals of different ages, genders and characters are shown. Students bring a sketch of a family of 4 and pets.
7th Week MIDTERM EXAM. The character designed from office materials is finalized.
8th Week Detailed emphasis is placed on facial expressions and emphasis on personality. The design of family of 4 and game animals is developed.
9th Week The points to be considered in animal design are examined in detail.
10th Week Professional character presentation techniques and the preparation of a character design pack are demonstrated.
11th Week Character design for different media is explained (Book, real-time movie and animation). Character design package is being worked on.
12th Week Periodic features, costumes and film style are discussed. It shows how research can be done on these issues.
13th Week Project designs are delivered.
14th Week Final.
