At the end of this course, the students; 1) Recognizes the professional and sectoral application areas of Visual Communication Design Department. 2) Can explain how visual communication works in all areas of daily life. 3) Recognizes the development of the history of visual communication and writing from the first ages to the present. 4) Knows the importance and interactions of industrial revolutions in design history. 5) Learns the basic concepts of semiotics. 6) Interprets the importance of signs and symbols in visual communication. 7) Analyzes the basic design and organization principles used in visual communication. 8) Gains the ability to aesthetic and conceptual problem solving; analyzing, evaluating and thinking critically about design and communication concepts and techniques. 9) Will be able to comment about the real world examples of visual communication design and have the ability to use them in the future.

COURSE DEFINITION
This is an introductory course to the field of visual communication. It aims to, starting from the earlier periods, teach the students the ability to read and analyze images in the art of painting and photography, to be able to read and analyze signs, symbols and images seen in daily life at a basic level and to teach them to add meaning to the representative image in order to produce new ideas. The course will focus on creating original ideas and experiencing various processes, techniques and methods such as abstraction, conceptual thinking, visual storytelling, movement and interaction. The aim of this course is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills about the use of visual communication elements and to help them acquire a culture of visual communication.

Introduction and announcement of course content. The concept of Visual Communication Design, its fields of study and application, its interaction with different disciplines.
2nd Week
Visual communication history. Definitions of communication and design concepts, their basic framework and their connection with visuality. The place and importance of visual communication elements in daily life. The relationship between visual culture and visual communication.
3rd Week
Design trends that affecting visual communication design. Industry 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 concepts, discussions on the future of visual communication.
4th Week
Visual communication and writing. Typography and illustration concepts in design.
5th Week
Aesthetic principles in visual organization; unity, contrast, rhythm and repetition, harmony, balance, proportion and visual hierarchy, visual continuity, emphasis.
6th Week
Aesthetic principles in visual organization; unity, contrast, rhythm and repetition, harmony, balance, proportion and visual hierarchy, visual continuity, emphasis.
7th Week
Introduction to semiotics. Verbal and non-verbal indicators. Semiotics and myths.
8th Week
Our culture and ways of seeing. Ideology, myth and language in Visual Communication.
9th Week
Midterm exam.

Visual thinking in design and art. Signs, signification, culture and communication.
11th Week
Narrative formation and narrative construction. Genres in the narrative. Methods used in meaning production; metaphor, metonymy, inclusion, parody, irony, description and representation.
12th Week
Photo reading and advertisement reviews as an example of visual communication design.
13th Week
Photo reading and advertisement reviews as an example of visual communication design.
14th Week
Rethinking an example of photography and advertising in line with design principles and elements of visual culture.
15th Week
Final exam.
