LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Explain the basic concepts of visual communication.
2) Interprets the relationship between the elements that make up the image.
3) Analyse the relationships between icon, index and symbols.
4) Use pictoral elements and symbols in semiological language.
5) Interpret visual communication design examples.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course, physical vision, psychology of visual perception, illusion, color theory, color-shape perception, figure-ground relationship, depth, identity of object, movement and visual memory are examined according to Gestalt visual perception principles. In addition, these topics will be discussed in the presence of works of art, photographs and short films.
COURSE CONTENTS

1st Week Introduction: Explanation of the scope, goals and objectives of the course
2nd Week What is communication, what is visual communication? The need to communicate; factors affecting perception
3rd Week Examples of early visual communication: ideographs, pictographs, prehistoric visual communication, Mesopotamia, Egyptian hieroglyphs, invention of writing, Chinese calligraphy, invention of paper
4th Week Alphabets: Phoenician, Greek, Latin, Korean; the effect of pressure on visual communication
5th Week Principles of design and visual communication
6th Week Visual perception: Gestalt, the difference between seeing and looking
7th Week Visual communication and semiology: sign, symbol, index and icon
8th Week MIDTERM
9th Week Symbols (I): What is a symbol, what is its meaning, how do they add meaning?
10th Week Symbols (II): Semantic analysis of symbols and corporate signs
11th Week Symbols (III): Abstraction, readability and meaning; abstraction in visual communication
12th Week Symbols (IV): Pictograms
13th Week The language of design (I): Representation and abstraction
14th Week The language of design (II): Allusion in visual communication - metaphor, trope, satire
15th Week FINAL EXAMINATION
