LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) To identify semantic characteristics particular to languages
2) To evaluate sense-relations based on paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations
3) To identify semantic relations
4) To define, classify and distinguish sense relations
5) To discuss the de Saussurean principle of sign and Ogden & Richards semiotic triangle in detail
6) To distinguish meaning from concept

COURSE DEFINITIONHistory of semantics , its place in linguistics, explanation of key concepts related to semantics, semantic features of Turkish language(lexis, sentential), framework of meaning, semantic processes , formal semantics; word, concept, meaning, scope; synonymy,antonymy, heteronymy; polysemy; diachronische semantics, semantic change, semantic extension, semantic restriction, metaphor, metonym and similar rhetorics.

2nd Week The semantics of linguistic items Language, lexeme, sign, sense, meaning
3rd Week Linguistic capability, phonemes, language and the word . The description of word after F. de Saussure
4th Week Classification of words and eponyms The meaning of words: concepts
5th Week Meaning and meaning types. Meaning relationships
6th Week Semantic change and rhetorical speech: Simile Representation
7th Week Sense attribution Eponymy Localisation Context Associations Paradigmatic, syntagmatic and derivational relationships
8th Week Mid-term
9th Week The dynamics of meaning. Semantic changes and equivalency
10th Week Conceptualisation (re-sematicisation) The world of concepts Rhetorics The conceptual wealth and synonymy in Modern Turkish
11th Week The semantics of Turkish, Concepts in Turkish (concrete and abstract concepts) Expressing yourself in Turkish
