LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Indicate the historical and cultural status of the Turks before Islam.
2) Classify the first written texts of the Turkic language.
3) Learn the runic alphabet.
4) Explain the phonetic, morphological, and syntactic features of Orkhon Turkic scripts.
5) Analyze the morphological features of the words in Orkhon Turkic scripts.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course, Orkhon Turkish used in Mongolia before the Turks accept Islam is discussed. Within the scope of Orkhon Turkish, history and culture of Kokturks, Turkish Runic alphabet and Turkish inscriptions with Runic letters are introduced, and the sections to be selected from Kul Tigin, Bilge Kagan and Tunyukuk are analyzed in terms of phonetics, structure, morphology, vocabulary and semantics. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the oldest period of Turkic languages that can be witnessed with written documents and to teach grammatical changes and developments in Turkic languages since this period.
