At the end of this course, the students; 1) identify and characterize the major styles, artists, and trends in North American colonial and U.S. art and architecture; 2) understand the history of the North American colonies and the United States and the pertinent cultural,social, economic, political, and religious influences on the visual arts; 3) understand the dynamic relationships between American art and architecture and European art and architecture; 4) analyze works of art, employing the terminology of the discipline.

COURSE DEFINITION
This course provides a comprehensive analysis of American art from the pre-colonial period to the end of the twentieth century in painting, sculpture, plastic arts, and architecture. Drawing on the evolving nature of the American experience through the lens of artistic production, this course will focus on major artistic styles, artworks, artists, and their relation to the audience, within their social, cultural, and political contexts.
