At the end of this course, the students; 1) Will dominate the historical process of visual and written communication. 2) Will have the capacity to interpret together with theoretical knowledge about the effects of political and ideological systems on communication. 3) Will evaluate the impact of social, economic, cultural and political developments and transformations in the world on communication processes and mass media. 4) Will gain an analytical perspective on the fact that all the tools called mass media and other tools that serve ideological production are used to influence people.

COURSE DEFINITION
To acquire a critical understanding of the current issues and debates within both academic and professional contexts of communication, public relations and publicity.

Meeting, sharing information about the course content. Introduction to the history of communication.
2nd Week
Mass communication patterns of ?Eastern? and ?Western? cultures in the historical process.
3rd Week
Communication methods in prehistoric times (Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic).
4th Week
Mass communication methods of ancient civilizations (Egypt, Greek, Rome) and first newspaper samples.
5th Week
Methods of announcing the ideology and belief systems of ancient civilizations to the masses. Monumental megalithic structures (Göbeklitepe, Stonhenge, Pyramids).
6th Week
The effects of belief systems on mass communication, monotheistic and polytheistic religions and teachings.
7th Week
Communication in the Medieval (Middle Age) and the Gothic period.
8th Week
Midterm Exam
9th Week
The Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. Effects of new inventions on communication history.
10th Week
Geographical discoveries and Industrial Revolution.
11th Week
Communication under the influence of imperialism and nationalism in the 19th century.
12th Week
20th century, I. and II. World Wars.

Modernism, modern life and communication after wars.
