General Information

Introduction

Established in the 1995-1996 academic year, The Department of American Culture and Literature offers a 4-year undergraduate program. The department aims to raise creative and dynamic individuals who are highly proficient in English, capable of analyzing language, culture, and literature, and who possess a thorough understanding of Western, particularly Anglo-Saxon and American, culture. Additionally, the department aims to prepare graduates for their postgraduate studies in universities both domestically and abroad, as well as for their careers in various sectors such as communication, media, tourism, embassies, cultural centers, international relations units of companies, language and culture consultancy, and translation. The program also aims to train individuals who can work as English teachers and instructors in various educational institutions. Our undergraduate program includes courses designed to improve students' written and spoken English skills, as well as courses that provide a foundation for the historical, literary, and critical study of American culture and literature. Our academic staff consists of 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 7 assistant professors, and 2 research assistants.

Department Objectives include raising individuals who:

AMERÖZ1- Have a deep knowledge of Western literature, culture, intellectual and social history, philosophy, art and political traditions in general and Anglo-Saxon and American literature in particular;

AMERÖZ2- Are able to approach, analyze and interpret the knowledge gained in the field through current criticism and narratology theories and use these skills in other discipline areas;

AMERÖZ3- Know literary genres and narrative techniques in detail and can relate them to literary texts;

AMERÖZ4- Have advanced language skills and are able to put these skills into practice in different disciplines by using information technologies through oral and written communication, translation, analysis, interpretation and evaluation;

AMERÖZ5- Are sensitive to social and ethical problems, and who can think critically, creatively and dynamically.
