Profile of the Programme

As the country continues its ambitious urbanization and industrialization process, new dimensions are added to the array of tasks that civil engineers must face. This includes the maintenance of the existing urban infrastructure and transportation public works, conservation of the environment and overall enhancement of the quality of living. One advantage that its English educational program is likely to convey to the students is that they will be able to examine the first resources in their original language and assimilate their contents quickly. The curriculum for the program follows an up-to-date form and content. The courses fulfill requirements of diversity, flexibility and complementarity in the interest of attracting students sustained interest and affiliation with the stimulation of intellectual curiosity. The next half century will bring many technological challenges for all members of the global community that will require increasingly more complex solutions using approaches that may not have been developed fully at the present. The fundamentals of existing and emerging technologies must be passed on to students now because they will serve as stakeholders or partners in their solution during their careers. The dynamics of globalized economies, fierce technological competition, and pervasive use of information technologies in the construction sector dictate that these trends must be anticipated so that the human capital is adequately prepared. The built environment built for the remainder of the twenty-first century must have enhanced reliability and resilience, display attributes of capacity in withstanding the destructive effects of earthquakes, floods and strong winds. Such goals can only be attained by engineers who are familiar with innovative analytical tools, techniques and procedures.

The Department is equipped with up-to-date labs for support of basic instruction in mechanics, geotechnical engineering, water systems and civil engineering materials. In the forthcoming years these labs will be expanded and equipped with systems that will enable research and development to be carried out in them.
