LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT	At the end of this course, the students; 1) Explain the basic principles and concepts aging and geriatrics 2) Defines the roles and responsibilities of the geriatric nurse 3) Discuss the ways and methods to be used in diagnosing the needs and health problems of the elderly person. 4) Lists nursing interventions by determining the care needs of the elderly patient.

COURSE DEFINITION	This course; it provides theoretical knowledge about the aging process, emerging issues related to aging and the solution of these problems.
COURSE CONTENTS	WEEK TOPICS 1st Week Introduction and explanation of the program, Old age concept and theories, Basic principles of geriatric 2nd Week Elderly Population in the World and Turkey, Geriatrics/Gerontology Nursing Roles and Responsibilities 3rd Week Evaluation of elderly health/ Comprehensive geriatric assessment 4th Week Physiological changes in the elderly 5th Week Geriatric Syndromes (Alzheimer's Disease, Osteoporosis, Urinary Incontinence, Diabetes, Sarcopenia) 6th Week Geriatric Syndromes (Alzheimer's Disease, Osteoporosis, Urinary Incontinence, Diabetes, Sarcopenia) 7th Week MID-TERM EXAMINATION 8th Week Geriatric emergencies and care 9th Week Psychological changes in the elderly 10th Week Safety Issues for Elderly People and its prevention (Prevention of house accidents and falling in the elderly-Drug use in the elderly) 11th Week Communication with elderly people and related factors 12th Week Elderly care at home (Formal care and informal care) 13th Week Ethical Issues in elderly care 14th Week Elder abuse Policies and Legislation related to aging
