At the end of this course, the students; 1) Define the main gender concepts (gender, gender roles, gender inequality, gender discrimination and sexism). 2) Comprehend and identify gender inequalities in main areas: education, health, political participation, economic participation and domestic labor. 3) Identify how gender affects social interactions in our daily lives. 4) Explain the changes, challenges and improvements on gender issues in the world and in Turkey. 5) Define violence against women and its types, dynamics, causes and consequences. 6) Explain improvements, mechanisms, international conventions and national regulations in combating violence against women, 7) Critically discuss current gender issues and challenges.

COURSE DEFINITION
The purpose of the course is to raise awareness of gender inequalities and
violence against women in the society. The course provides students with basic
theoretical knowledge on gender related concepts, issues and violence against women.
Students will be informed about the current developments on gender issues in the
world and in Turkey while students will be encouraged to discuss contemporary
gender issues and develop a critical perspective towards social and cultural
constructions of gender, femininity and masculinity and how these categories shape
our lives.
