LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Understand advantages/limitations and assess the most suitable ground improvement solution for a project,
2) Design preloading with or without vertical drains,
3) Design dynamic compaction ground improvement solution,
4) Design vibro-compaction system,
5) Design stone columns,
6) Design geosynthetic reinforced walls and
slopes,
7) Design soil nailing,
8) Design retaining walls.

1st Week Introduction to ground improvement, a review on available techniques
2nd Week Compaction; laboratory compaction tests, field compaction equipments, properties of compacted soils
3rd Week Compaction; laboratory compaction tests, field compaction equipments, properties of compacted soils
4th Week Preloading and vertical drains
5th Week Preloading and vertical drains
6th Week Deep vibratory methods; vibro-compaction methods, vibro-replacement stone columns, mitigation against liquefaction
7th Week Deep vibratory methods; vibro-compaction methods, vibro-replacement stone columns, mitigation against liquefaction
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Cement grouting, jet grouting, compaction grouting, hydraulic fracturing, monitoring, controls and acceptance tests
10th Week Cement grouting, jet grouting, compaction grouting, hydraulic fracturing, monitoring, controls and acceptance tests
11th Week Soil mixing; dry and wet methods for shallow and deep mixing, strength of stabilized soil
