1) Can recognize and define the study area of the communication sociology,
2) Learn the theory and theorists in the context of the communication sociology,

4) Can comment on mass media and propaganda techniques.

COURSE DEFINITIONWithin the scope of the course, it is aimed to discuss the connection between society and communication through theories and theorists, starting from the basic concepts of communication sociology. The relationship between communication and sociology, the fields of the communication sociology, the sociological dimension of the mass media are among the main topics of the course. Communication on a wide scale from capitalism to feminism will be discussed with its sociological dimension.

1st Week Meeting and General Information About the Course. Relationship between Sociology and Communication. Definition and Field of Study of Communication Sociology. Mass Communication and Mass Media.
2nd Week Mass Media Theories Overview and Propaganda Techniques
3rd Week Structuralist Theorists: Pierre Bourdieu ? Habitus, Capital and Field. Noam Chomsky - Propaganda, Manipulation, Consent and Persuasion.
4th Week Structural History Theorists: Fernand Braudel ? Material Civilization and Capitalism
5th Week Post-Structuralist Theorists: Jacgues Derrida ? Deconstruction. Michel Foucault ? Power, Discourse, Subjectivity and Sexuality.
6th Week Semiotic Theorists: Roland Barthes- Myths, Bourgeois Society and Fashion. Julia Kristeva ? Love, Melancholy, Depression and Alienation.
7th Week Midterm
8th Week Second Generation Feminist Theorists: Luce Irigaray ? Freedom, Linguistic Order and Gender Order. Carole Pateman ? The Ideal Citizen and the Sexual Contract.
9th Week Post-Marxist Theorists: Hannah Arendt ? Power, Violence, and the Public Space. Alain Touraine ? Social Movements.
10th Week Modernist Theorists: Friedrich Nietzsche ? Power, Collectivism and Individualism. George Simmel ? Conflict as a Form of Social Interaction, Money, Indirect Being Human
11th Week Postmodernist Theorists: Jean Baudrillard ? Culture of Consumption, Simulation, Mass Communication. Jean F. Lyotard ? Metanarratives, Language Games and the New Position of Knowledge.
12th Week Communication Sociology in Turkey I: İdris Küçükömer ? Civil Society, Culture and Ideology, Media and Cultural Imperialism.
13th Week Communication Sociology in Turkey II: Behice Boran ? Freedom of Thought, Expression and Press, Dialogical Persuasion Method. Objects and Stories.
