LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Understanding the importance of plant layout and production line determination.
2) Ability to enhance the production line of a plant for different types of products and different types of demands.
3) To learn the factors that affect the selection of plant location and auxiliary installations.
4) Enhancing production quality and speed in production plants, using organization and production line schemes.
5) Ability to arrange intermediate products, stocking and warehousing in production plants.

COURSE DEFINITIONOrganizational concepts. Plant location, location factors, plant site selection guide. Plant layout and material flow; objectives of plant layout, industrial buildings, types of layouts, product layout, process layout, cellular layout, fixed-position layout. Material flow systems; conveyors, robots, inventory systems, interm stocks. Alternative solutions in plant design; factors and methods, product characteristics and quantity, strategies relating to technology and products, manufacturing systems, cost calculation, machine tool selection, layout selection, algorithms relating to programmable layout, material flow, inventory systems.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction to plant layout, selection of plant site, location factors.
2nd Week Performance determination of production system, cost, flexibility, time and reliability criteria, performance criteria and relation with location types.
3rd Week Comparison of plant layout types, material flow layout, project layout.
4th Week Material flow analysis, array diagram, multiple array processes.
5th Week Analysis of activities, workflow, non-dimensional block diagrams.
6th Week Principles and aims of material flow, control list of transportation.
7th Week Equipments of material transportations, AS/RS systems, conveyors, automatic vehicles.
8th Week Pixed-position layout, determination of number of transport vehicles.
9th Week Layout of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), components, manufacturing centers.
10th Week Layout of flexible manufacturing systems, robots, material transportations.
11th Week Layout of flexible manufacturing systems, layout types in FMS.
12th Week Cellular manufacturing systems, requirements, family of work pieces.
13th Week Cellular manufacturing systems, cell layout, concept of stock and intermediate product, integration of cells.
14th Week Other criteria on plant layout, selection of machining tools, number of workstations, cost.
