COURSE CONTENTS

1st Week Basic Concepts: mehter, mehterhane, tablhane, tabl-ü alem, cultural and political symbolism of mehter.
2nd Week Turkish music, mehter music and janissary music.
3rd Week Mehter music as a musical style.
4th Week Mehter musicians: composers and performers.
5th Week The repertoire of mehter music: Notations of Ali Ufki and Kantemiroğlu.
6th Week Mehter music: meşk, nevbet and fasil concepts.
7th Week Two case study for historical mehter repertoire: 'Ciğerdelen' and 'Tozkoparan' peşrevs.
8th Week Midterm.
9th Week Instruments of mehter music and its band.
10th Week Performing characteristics of mehter music.
11th Week Iconographic sources of historical mehter music.
12th Week Mehter according to Evliya Çelebi and various European travelers.
13th Week Impact of mehter music on Europe.
14th Week Current status of mehter music.
