COURSE DEFINITIONFilm Critics is designed for the students who are interested in cinema and willing to improve their analysing skills at competent level. Inthe course, film critics approaches will be studied by watching and establishing a mutual relations with suitable films.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction of the course / discussing the differences between popular and academic ways of reading film.
2nd Week Examining the relations of film critics and philosophy / introduction to the sociological approach.
3rd Week Film screening about the sociological approach 12 Angry Men (Sidney Lumet, 1957) / discussing the film in the context of sociological approach.
4th Week Examining the ideological approach.
5th Week Film screening about the ideological approach (They Live, John Carpenter, 1988) / discussing the film in the context of ideological approach.
6th Week Discussing the semantics and semiology / examining the semiological approach in the film critics.
7th Week Film screening about the semiological approach (Paris, Texas, Wim Wenders, 1984) / discussing the film in the context of the semiological approach.
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Discussing the studies about gender roles / examining the feminist approach in the film critics.
10th Week Discussing about the auteurs in the film history / examining the auteur approach in the film critics.
11th Week Film screening about the auteur approach Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2011) / discussing the film in the context of the auteur approach.
12th Week Examining the psychoanalitical approach in the film critics.
13th Week Auteur approach.
14th Week Discussion about a film in the context of auteur approach: The Passenger (M. Antonioni, 1975).
