LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Can express an opinion about the general aspects of history and theory of conservation.
2) Can comment on legal and administrative aspects of conservation of historic sites in Turkey.
3) Can discuss on national and international cases of conservation of historic sites.
4) Can use methods and basic terminology of conservation of historic sites.
5) Can assess historic sites through the works on analysis and documentation in different scales.
6) Can develop conservation strategies by defining values, problems and potentials of a historic site.
7) Can develop design and new intervention proposals for problematic areas within historic site.

RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL PROGRAMME COMPONENT-
COURSE DEFINITIONThis course aims to introduce architecture students to the concepts of historic site and conservation with a manner of systematic and contemporary tools/approaches. The course is structured around theoretical lectures and site surveys on a selected historic settlement that has conservation problems in different scales. Each semester, students are expected to conduct a site survey on the selected area; and determine its physical, social, economic and visual aspects. Additionally through library and archive research, it is also expected to reveal the patterns of urban development and its change through time. By the end of the course, students are expected to evaluate the data gathered, understand the authentic character of the historic site and develop conservation and design proposals on different scales accordingly.
