LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Describe and explain the artistic and architectural productions of the societies, which ruled during the time period and within the geographical borders selected to be concentrated in this semester.
2) Be able to distinguish and compare the artistic, architectural and urban works and productions of the selected cultures.
3) Be able to evaluate and discuss similar and different works of art and architecture in relation to probable synchronic and diachronic encounters, relations and interactions through the socio-cultural, economic and religious milieu of their belonging societies and cultures.
4) Develop and interpret current debates, approaches and studies in architectural history.
5) Develop and use skills on thinking, reading, and writing on architecture.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course, architectural culture in history is comparatively evaluated. Diachronic and synchronic encounters, interactions, and relations of societies which spread from Europe to Asia and those particularly settled in Anatolia and the Middle East are studied. The content of the course varies each term with focus on a particular selected time period throughout history. In this context, the approaches on the shaping of the built environment, artistic production and especially architectural edifices of varied cultures of the selected period each term are discussed comparatively, while at the same time highlighting the possible encounters.

5th Week Anatolia at the intersection of architectural encounters and interactions during the 12th ? 13th centuries: Seljuks - Byzantines - Crusaders
6th Week Seljuk culture and architecture from Iran to Anatolia: Continuity and change
7th Week Mamluks and Seljuks, Anatolia under the Mongol rule
