LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Students will gain the ability to vary, change or reinventing the exsisting melody of a Jazz, Blues or other populer music song style according to the original harmonic sequence during the performance as well as producing syncronized counter melodies and creating melodies without accompaniment.

COURSE DEFINITIONGaining the ability to sing authentic melodies over Jazz, Blues and other populer music styles without using the original melody.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Cycle of Fifths, working on recognizing diatonic chords using the Cycle.
2nd Week Exercises on the II-V pattern, analysis of II-V patterns in Jazz Standards ,
3rd Week Improvisation on II-V patters using the Cycle of Fifths.
4th Week Analysis of the Rhythm Changes song form, ways and exercises for soloing on this form.
5th Week More than two soloist trading fours and eights on Rhythm changes.
6th Week Harmonic analysis of the Jazz Standard, choosing the right scale and notes
7th Week Improvising over a Jazz Standard in AB form.
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Improvising over a Jazz Standard in AABA form.
10th Week Transcriptions: the importance, benefits and ways of transcribing solo. Listening to and analysing already transcribed solos.
11th Week Modal improvisation: modes, modal songs and soloing over them.
12th Week A Capella circle singing, conducting the circle and choosing grooves.
13th Week Improvising on tonic or subdominant pedal, free improvisation without accompaniment.
14th Week Presentation of student projects.
