COURSE DEFINITION
Gaining the ability to sing authentic melodies over Jazz, Blues and other populer music styles without using the original melody.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEK
TOPICS
1st Week
What is improvisation, the importance of improvistion in Jazz music, differences between instrumental and vocal improvisation, Scat, the history of Scat singing.
2nd Week
The analysis of Scat singing, frequently used syllable patters, rhythmic Scat etudes,
3rd Week
What to do before improvising, song analysis and form analysis.
4th Week
Traditional diatonic patterns, eighth note and sixteenth note exercises and variations.
5th Week
Triplets, triplet exercises, the major and pentatonic scale, pentatonic scale exercises.
6th Week
Eight bar, twelve bar and sixteen bar Blues forms, the Blues scale.
7th Week
Execution of the pentatonic and blues scales in Blues song forms.
8th Week
Midterm
9th Week
Melodic embelishments: ways to transform the melody into a solo.
10th Week
Using traditional AAB Blues lyrics to improvise over a twelve bar Blues form.
11th Week
Rhythmic considerations: Syllable articulations, vowels and accents
12th Week
Melodic considerations: phrasing, chord tones, approach notes and target notes.
13th Week
Putting together the traditional AAB Blues lyrics with an improvised melody, followed by a written then improvised solo.
14th Week
Presentation of student projects.
