LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) know with the birth, growth and eras of Jazz as well as the properties, instrumentation and musicians of each era: they recognize the harmonic construction and populer forms of each style.

COURSE DEFINITIONTo teach the birth, development, styles and important musicians of Jazz music.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction to Jazz music, the origin of the word "jazz", the basic principles of Jazz.
2nd Week Field Hollers, Prison Songs Gospel, Spirituals and the Blues.
3rd Week The effect of Blues on Jazz. Origins of Jazz: Ragtime, Stride, military music and other elements that contributed to the birth of Jazz.
4th Week Early Jazz: New Orleans Combo Jazz proir to the mid 1930s, Dixieland, the Chicago School.
5th Week Dixieland to Swing: elements that transformed the music, the birth of the "swing feel", instrumentation.
6th Week Swing Era: the early 1930s to the late 1940s, Big Bands and band leaders.
7th Week Student projects are presented in class.
8th Week MID-TERM EXAM
9th Week Bebop: the early 1940s to the mid 1950s.
10th Week Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, West Coast Style of the 1950s.
11th Week Free Jazz: what makes it "free"
12th Week Improvisation: analysis of changes in improvisation from style to style.
13th Week Twenty years of Jazz, Rock and American Populer music: the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s. Distinguishing Jazz from Rock and Funk, Fusion styles.
14th Week Presentation of student projects.
