LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) will be familiar with the structure, common rules, characteristics and styles in Jazz music and will recognize major musicians from each era.

COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week The meaning of the word "Jazz", the origin of jazz music, external influences that caused its formation; Identifying the jazz musician.
2nd Week Basic elements of jazz music, tempo, beats, rhythm, syncopation, "swing" feeling and improvisation in jazz music.
3rd Week Blues, Ragtime, Boogie Woogie, New Orleans and Dixieland: forms used, patterns, instrumentation and notable musicians.
4th Week Notation in jazz music: Differences between Lead Sheet, Chart and Sheet music, techniques for reading and analyzing charts, following and arranging solos.
5th Week Basic chords and chord patterns used in jazz music, roles of dominant and II-V chord pattern.
6th Week Forms of jazz music: twelve measure Blues form, thirty-two measure Jazz forms, modal forms and ways to identify other forms.
7th Week Presentation of student projects.
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Improvisation: its birth and development, the skills of the improviser, the elements to be considered while listening to improvisation. The effect of form in improvisation.
10th Week The evolution of instruments: instruments from period to period, their changing roles in groups and orchestras, their developing and changing roles after they started to improvise.
11th Week Forms, patterns, arrangements, improvisations and important musicians used in the swing period.
12th Week Forms, patterns, arrangements, improvisations and important musicians used in the Bebop, Cool Jazz and Hardbop periods.
13th Week Changes in Jazz music from the 1960s to the present, new styles that emerged as a result of merging with other music styles, are important names of new styles.
14th Week Presentation of student projects.
