1) will be able to write the counterpoint parts over/under a given cantus firmus in combinatory style, he/she can analyze the background counterpoint organization in a given work, can apply these on a 4 part motet that he/she will write.

COURSE DEFINITIONApplication of the previous studies in 4 and more part counterpoint. The use of the counterpoint in musical composition. Investigation of missa, chanson, and other polyphonic genres.

1st Week Introduction to course.
2nd Week Points of imitation. Combination exercises in 4 parts with/without cantus firmus.
3rd Week Total imitation. Non-canonic total imitation.
4th Week Combination exercises in 5-6 parts with/without cantus firmus.
5th Week Combination exercises in 5-6 parts with/without cantus firmus.
6th Week Midterm project: Write a 5-6 part motet on one of the themes provided by the instructor.
7th Week Chanson and missa.
8th Week Chanson and missa.
9th Week Chanson and missa.
10th Week Antiphonal choral. Double choir.
11th Week Presentations of midterm project.
12th Week Types of cannon. Techniques to write a cannon.
13th Week Types of cannon. Techniques to write a cannon.
14th Week Instructions on final projects.
