COURSE DEFINITION	To explain the basic composition techniques used at the first half of the 20th century.
COURSE CONTENTS	WEEK TOPICS 1st Week Brief introduction of the 20th century Composition Techniques I course, the resources to be used and the way of studying 2nd Week Extended tonality and its use. 1. Chopin - Prelude in A minor, Op. 28, No. 2. 3rd Week Extended tonality and its use. A short passage from Brahms - Senfoni No.1, Op. 68, II Hugo Wolf - Das verlassene Magdlein Scriabin - Prelude No. 2 from 24 preludes or equivalent pieces. 4th Week Use of church modes, planning (parallelism), pentatonic scale and whole tone scale. Debussy - Nocturns, 5th Week Polyharmony, synthetic modes. 6th Week Rhythm and meter. Copland - Appalachian Spring, mm. 86-98. Stravinsky - Danse de la foire, Petrouchka?dan. Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring - Sacrificial Dance (The Choosen One). Carter - String Quartet No. 2, Movement 2, mm. 181-186. Carter - String Quartet No. 1, Movement 1. Messiaen - Quatuor Pour La Fin Du Temps (Quartet for The End of Time) - VI. Danse de la fureur, pour les sept trompettesor equivalent pieces. 7th Week Basic concepts and techniques in atonal (or pan-tonal) music. Webern 8th Week Twelve-tone serialism.
