COURSE DEFINITIONTo comprehend the functional structure of the tonal system. To be able to create a melody with functional chord progression on a given bass line, or to create a bass line with functional chord progression under a given melody line. To run them in various textures as well as the choral writing technique. To gain the ability to analyze relevant examples from the literature.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Explaining the content and requirements of the course. Non-functional uses of the dominant function. Practice of the subject on a given coded bass, plain bass or soprano. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
2nd Week Use of 9th, 11th and 13th chords. Making applications under different textural understandings. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
3rd Week Common vowel missing quintet chords. Color changes created by different chord connections. The use of tonal harmony in the late romantic period. Practice of the subject on a given coded bass, plain bass or soprano. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
4th Week The relation of harmonic structure with counterpoint. Teaching extended tonality concepts. Making applications under different textural understandings.
5th Week Introduction to twentieth century music: Impressionism and applied harmonic approaches. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
6th Week MIDTERM
7th Week Diatonic church modes, pentatonic scales, synthetic scales. Making applications under different textural understandings. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
8th Week Harmony consisting of extended 3-voice chords, polyharmonic, quartal and secundal harmony. Making applications under different textural understandings. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
9th Week Parallelism and planning concepts. Pandiatonism. Block chord uses. Making applications under different textural understandings. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
10th Week Atonal theory. Making applications under different textural understandings. Analysis of selected samples from the literature.
11th Week MIDTERM
12th Week 12-tone serialism. Tonal serialism. Making applications under different textural understandings. Analysis of selected samples from the literature. Explaining the subject of the final homework: 1- Applying 3 of the weekly assignments done during the term to 3 different textures. 2- Analyzing 1 piece chosen by the student from the pieces suggested by the lecturer, selected from the literature.
13th Week Aleotric or luck music. Extended instrumental uses. Analysis of selected samples from the literature. Consultation on final assignments.
14th Week Extended instrumental uses. Analysis of selected samples from the literature. An overview. Consultation on final assignments.
