At the end of this course, the students; 1) Can write the counterpoint part over/under a given cantus firmus. 2) Analyze the background counterpoint organization in a given work. 3) Can demonstrate similar approaches in a short 2-voice innovation he/she compose.

COURSE DEFINITION
Understands the difference between polyphonic techniques, learns the rules of two-voice strict counterpoint. Masters subjects up to the 4th variety in two part counterpoint.

The scope of the course. Homophony, Polyphony concepts. Cantus Firmus, Dis Cantus.
2nd Week
General information about strict counterpoint, free counterpoint, convertible counterpoint, imitation counterpoint. Related forms.
3rd Week
Horizontal rules for strict two-voice counterpoint.
4th Week
Vertical (harmony) rules for strict two-voice counterpoint.
5th Week
1st Kind (one against one) study on the c.f given in the major tradition in the sub-party.
6th Week
1st kind (one against one) work under the c.f given in the major tradition in the upper party.
7th Week
2nd Type (two against one) on the c.f given in the sub-lot in major and minor customs
8th Week
Midterm.
9th Week
The second kind of work in the lower and upper parties in Doryen, Frigian customs.
10th Week
3. Kind (four against one) work on the c.f given in the sub-party in major, minor, dorian and frigian customs.
11th Week
3. Kind (four against one) work under the c.f given in the upper party in major, minor, dorian and frigian customs.
12th Week
4. Kind (with syncope) study on the c.f given in the sub-lot in major, minor, dorian, frigian customs.
