COURSE DEFINITIONTo comprehend the functional structure of the tonal system. To be able to create a melody with functional chord progressions on a given bass line, or to create a bass line with functional chord progressions under a given melody line. To study them in various textures as well as the choral writing technique. To gain the ability to analyze relevant examples from the literature.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction to I-V and I-IV-I progressions in root position. Realization of basses and melodies. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
2nd Week I-IV-V progression in root positions. Realization of basses and melodies. Texture and its effect. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
3rd Week I-IV-V progression in minor tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
4th Week First inversions of I and IV chords in both minor and major tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
5th Week Mid-term exam.
6th Week First inversion of V chord in both minor and major tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
7th Week Strategies for realizing a melody. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
8th Week Second inversion of I chord as cadential usage in both minor and major tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
9th Week Dominant seventh chord in both minor and major tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
10th Week Mid-term exam.
11th Week Non-chord tones. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature. Determination of the final projects: 1- Apply 3 different textures to each of 3 selected bass or melody realization studied as homeworks previously. 2- Analysis of one passage selected from the literature.
12th Week Inversions of the dominant seventh chord in both minor and major tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
13th Week Linear second inversion chords in both minor and major tonalities. Realization of basses and melodies. Exercises on applying different textures on the same harmonic concept. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
