RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL PROGRAMME COMPONENTThere is no recommended optional programme component for this course.
COURSE DEFINITIONThis course begins with the connection between politics and media codes, practices and genres that have historically reproduced the gendered socio-political codes. It then interrogates whether and to what extent certain media practices, which have been said to obtain in the Turkish context, are operative in other parts of the world, notably the US and the Middle East. A second portion of the course will look at issues of women's disempowerment, particularly in the developing world. It will examine media strategies, chiefly entertainment education and participatory communication designed to address those problems.
