At the end of this course, the students; 1) have the knowledge about the Central Asian societies and cultures. 2) understand the social, cultural and political changes caused by the transition to a market economy. 3) discuss the socio-political conflicts in the region.

COURSE DEFINITION
The course will focus on the former Soviet geography in a broad sense and on Central Asia in a narrow sense. The course aims to examine the independence processes of four former Soviet republics in the Central Asia since 1991 within the frame of certain themes. The course will firstly examine the history of Central Asia and then the political, social, cultural, economic changes and transformations that have taken place in the Central Asia during the Soviet Union period and the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union will be explained. Within this framework, the nations policy of the Soviet Union, collapse of the Soviet Union, post-Soviet nation and state building, language policies followed during nation and state building process, demography, migration, minorities and Islam in post-Soviet Central Asia are among the topics that will be examined in the course.
