RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL PROGRAMME COMPONENTThere is no recommended optional programme component for this course.
COURSE DEFINITIONThis course is designed for students of Political Science and International Relations in order identify the centrality of social movements in the 20th and 21st centuries. One of the central aims of this course is to provide a systematic discipline to students to critically analyse the formations and operationalisation of social movements, considered as one of the central power agents in contemporary democratic politics. The introductory part of the course elaborates general characteristics of social movements as well as their distinctiveness vis-a-vis other state or non-state organisations such as political parties or civil society organisations. The first part of the course covers Marxist political thought with a special emphasis to three thinkers (Marx, Lenin and Gramsci) as the leading figures to open up the possibility for the emergence of social movement studies as a separate discipline in the study of social and political science. The second part covers four dominant theoretical trends within social movement studies: the collective behaviour theory, resource mobilisation theory, political process model, and new social movement theory. Following that part, contemporary approaches to the study of social movements will be covered with an emphasis on their central components including framing, political opportunity structures, discourse, emotions, ideology and culture. In the final part, social movements will be revisited thematically and empirically by covering a number of case studies that historically and contemporarily study labour movements, women?s movements, religious movements, environmentalist movements, human rights movements, and transnational movements.
