COURSE DEFINITIONThis course is designed for undergraduate students of Political Science and International Relations to comprehend the development of the modern liberal thought system between the 16th and 20th centuries and the emergence of alternative thought systems that objected to this system of thought for various reasons, within the historical background of the period. The course, which will focus on thinkers who have made significant contributions to the world of modern Western political thought, is grouped under three headings. In the first part, contract theories that describe the concepts of "sovereignty" and "modern state", which are the main issues of modern western political thought, will be explained through Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau. In the second part, the relationship between the concepts of enlightenment and the "modern state" will be explained by considering thinkers such as Benedictus Spinoza and Baron de Montesquieu. In the last part, liberalism and modern state understanding that emerged after the French Revolution and thought systems and ideologies that objected to this understanding will be discussed. In this context, a number of oppositions that shape modern political thought (republicanism/libertarianism, liberalism/conservatism, individualism/utilitarianism, liberalism/socialism, etc.) are discussed within the scope of the works of Edmund Burke, Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, Thomas Hill Green and Karl Marx.
