At the end of this course, the students; 1) Comprehend comparing the current and previous content of development economics and interpreting the indicators related to development 2) Comprehend the incentive mechanisms based on multiple equilibrium theories 3) Examine the economic effects of migration on development in the context of development theories 4) Examine the relationship between environmental problems and development 5) Understand the relationship among human capital, level of technology or productivity, foreign direct investments and savings within the framework of a model 6) Understand the relationship between agriculture and industry by establishing a model and examine the structural transformation 7) Learn the relationship between foreign trade and development in general and within the framework of export-led growth model 8) Analyze the financing of development.

COURSE DEFINITION
In this course, we will analyze and apply economic theory to the empirical observations of economic growth and answer the following questions: Why does the output per capita in some countries grow faster than others? Why do living standards differ so much across countries and regions? Why are some countries 50 times richer than others? Why do per capita growth rates differ over long periods? What are the limits to growth?

Classification of Countries and Problems of Backward Countries (poverty, income distribution, migration, vulnerable employment, colonial past and reverse path-dependency etc.), Discussion: What criteria explain backwardness? Does development have to be linear progressive?
4th Week
A Brief History of Development, Discussion: How has the role of the state changed in the development process?
5th Week
Multiple Equilibrium, Population and Development Theories, Discussion: How does the economy get out of low-level equilibria?
6th Week
Current Development Issues: Environmental Issues, Migration, Discussion: What is the relationship between pollution and development? What choices might a development policy on migration include?
7th Week
Economic Design and Development, Discussion: By what steps does the representative social planner design the development process?

Technological Development, Discussion: How do types of technological progress affect development policy?

Demand Constraint, Catching-up, Foreign Direct Investments, Discussion: What is the choice between a policy that increases the savings rate and a human capital policy regarding foreign direct investments?
