LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Define the main gender concepts (gender, gender roles, gender inequality, gender
discrimination and sexism).
2) Comprehend and identify gender inequalities in main areas: education, health,
political participation, economic participation and domestic labor.
3) Identify how gender affects social interactions in our daily lives.
4) Explain the changes, challenges and improvements on gender issues in the world
and in Turkey.
5) Define violence against women and its types, dynamics, causes and consequences.
6) Explain improvements, mechanisms, international conventions and national
regulations in combating violence against women,
7) Critically discuss current gender issues and challenges.

COURSE DEFINITIONThe purpose of the course is to raise awareness of gender inequalities and violence against women in the society. The course provides students with basic theoretical knowledge on gender related concepts, issues and violence against women. Students will be informed about the current developments on gender issues in the world and in Turkey while students will be encouraged to discuss contemporary gender issues and develop a critical perspective towards social and cultural constructions of gender, femininity and masculinity and how these categories shape our lives.

1st Week Introduction, introduction of the course, aim and objectives, students' expectations about the course
2nd Week Basic concepts of gender
3rd Week Basic concepts of gender (gender-based division of labor, gender-based discrimination)
4th Week Gender inequality in key areas (education, employment, participation in decision-making mechanisms, health)
5th Week What is sexism? Discussion of materials on sexism (news, movies, advertisements, social media posts, etc.)
6th Week Gender and health
7th Week History of women's movements in the world and in Turkey
8th Week Violence against women: Current situation in the world and Turkey
9th Week Midterm exam
10th Week International and national developments and legal mechanisms in combating violence against women
11th Week Dating Violence
12th Week What can we do against sexual harassment and assault at universities?
13th Week Non-discrimination and the principle of equality: Scope and Content
14th Week Evaluation of the period
15th Week Final exam
