COURSE DEFINITIONThis course aims to provide a general overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of the art of cinema. It aims to offer a basic understanding of the elements that constitute films within the historical evolution of cinema and to foster understanding and awareness of the technical, institutional, historical, and sociological aspects of films.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction and general overview of the course content.
2nd Week From moving pictures to cinema. Auguste-Louis Lumiere's "L'arrivee d'un train a La Ciotat" and other films. Georges Melies' "Le Voyage dans la lune."
3rd Week Classical Hollywood Cinema, Edwin Stanton Porter's "The Great Train Robbery," David W. Griffith's "The Birth of A Nation."
4th Week Silent comedies; Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd.
5th Week Soviet Silent Cinema and Montage. Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin."
6th Week German Expressionism. R. Wiene's "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," F. Lang's "Metropolis."
7th Week Hollywood Studio System.
8th Week Midterm Exam.
9th Week Italian Neorealism. Vittorio De Sica's "Bicycle Thieves."
10th Week French New Wave. Godard's "Breathless," Truffaut's "The 400 Blows."
11th Week Genres in Cinema, Western, Horror, and Musical.
12th Week Elements of Narrative in Cinema I.
13th Week Elements of Narrative in Cinema II and Evaluation.
