At the end of this course, the students; 1) Evaluate the reflection of Tanzimat edict on society and literature. 2) Discuss the Ottoman modernization critically. 3) Distinguish the writers and poets of the Tanzimat I. period. 4) Analyze the works of Tanzimat I. period with their socio-cultural and literary values. 5) Recognize the different genres written in the Tanzimat period.

COURSE DEFINITION
This course will provide on overview of Turkish literature from the Tanzimat period. Emphasis will be on the development of literary genres, the conflict between tradition modernity in the writers of the Tanzimat period and their works.
