COURSE DEFINITION
Following on AMER 138 History of English Literature, this course will focus on various literary movements, genres, or issues in English literature.

1st Week
A short explanation as regards the pragmatics and methodics of the course. This will be followed by a general introduction to Shakespeares social and literary background.
2nd Week
Introduction to The Merchant of Venice: genre, structure, dramatic characteristics; a problem play? Racism, negative stereotyping, and anti-semitism in Shakespeares England
3rd Week
Critical analysis of The Merchant of Venice in terms of plot, characterization, theme, gender, race, class, Otherness, and the audience response in Shakespeares theatre;
