At the end of this course, the students; 1) Express a familiarity with American cultures, histories, literatures, and institutions. 2) Place American texts, cultural artifacts, and intellectual debates within an historical context. 3) Reflect upon and engage in intellectual debate and argumentation, coming to respect different opinions in the process.

COURSE DEFINITION
This course is designed to appreciate the American intellectual tradition from the early 17th century to the mid 19th century, and to investigate how a variety of intellectuals interpreted, analyzed, critiqued, and contributed to major events in early American history. The course covers such major topics as Puritanism, Republicanism, Liberalism, Evangelicalism, Transcendentalism, Abolitionism, Nationalism, and Sectionalism.
