LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) acquire a critical knowledge on the beginnings and historical development of Turkish-American relations,
2) analyze and discuss the processes and political happenings that have had an impact on Turkish-American relations,
3) make, from both Turkish and American perspectives, a comparative evaluation of the historical, social, cultural and political dimensions and contexts,
4) can carry out research on subjects concerning Turkish-American relations,
5) comment with a critical and analytical approach the representations of Turkish-American relations in literature and the media.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course, the main focus falls on the beginnings of Turkish-American relations in history and the major phases of the development of these relations up to the present. Although the subject may be studied primarily in a political and diplomatic context, extensive references are also made to cultural, economic and institutional relations. For illustration, relevant texts of memoirs, historical narratives, letters, biographies and autobiographies may be used as part of the contents of the course.

1st Week Introduction: the subject and contents of the course explained in broader terms (Syllabus details).
2nd Week The multiple significance of Turkish-American relations.
3rd Week Beginnings of Turkish-American relations in history.
4th Week Ottoman-American relations during the antebellum period (the 1820s to 1861)
5th Week Ottoman-American relations in the aftermath of the Civil War and down to World War I;
6th Week The political, cultural, and social impact of American missionary activities. Trade and politics.
7th Week Turkish-American relations between World War I and World War II;
8th Week Midterm Examination
9th Week Turkish-American relations during World War II.
10th Week Turkish-American relations in the post-war period, The Marshall Plan, the Korean War, Turkey's entry into NATO.
11th Week The beginnings of the Cold War.
12th Week Turkish-American relations from the 1960s down to the present: The Cold War and the aftermath.
13th Week An overall view and wrap-up.
