COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course principally, production /operations function will be introduced; production systems and operations strategy will be examined. The productivity concept, its importance, and the ways to increase productivity will be covered. After being given this fundamental information, long-range strategic decisions (product and service design, process planning, capacity planning, technology selection, facility location, layout and job design) are to be made in order to compete on the dimensions of quality, cost, flexibility and speed, will be covered. Then short-term operational decisions related to production planning, inventory and quality management will be dealt with. Some of these topics will be supported by quantitative decision-making techniques. The topics will be discussed for both goods and services-producing firms, and also the effect on productivity of the decisions in each decision area will be discussed.
