COURSE DEFINITION | Course Description: In this course we deal with Middle Eastern politics from the end of the First World War to the present time. We begin with a lecture on the end of the Ottoman era and the British and French takeover of former Ottoman territories. We then carry on with Middle Eastern politics in the inter-war era concentrating in particular on Iran, Turkey, Syria and Saudi Arabia, as well as Egypt and the Palestine Mandate, and move on to the political developments in the region after the Second War. We look at the de-colonization process in the Middle East and major political developments in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Egypt as well as the conflict between the Arabs and Israel, and then we focus on the radicalization of Arab politics in the 1970s. We examine the period of upheaval in the 1970s and 1980s with special reference to the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and the Israeli-Palestinian relations in the post-Cold War era. We?ll hold lectures on the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the Arab Spring events across the region with special focus on Syria war, 2011, to the present. |
