At the end of this course, the students; 1) understand the European Union's historical development 2) know the EU's most important policies and its institutional structure. 3) evaluate the enlargement processes and the widening - deepening debates. 4) apply their knowledge within debates within and about the EU. 5) get into contact with stakeholders via the interviews they conduct.

COURSE DEFINITION
The purpose of this course is to understand the historical evolution of European integration. Therefore, the historical background of European integration in the aftermath of the WWII will be underlined. In that respect, important developments in European integration i.e. Treaty reforms and EU enlargements will be mentioned. In addition, EU institutions and certain EU policies will be studied. Lastly, Turkey-EU relations will be discussed, briefly.

The Historical Background of European Integration (1945-1957): The Cold War, the Schuman Declaration, the Marshall Plan, the European Coal and Steel Community, European Defence Community (failed), the European Economic Community, the Euratom.
2nd Week
The Historical Background of European Integration (1958-1972): France, Germany and European integration, the empty chair crisis and the Luxembourg compromise, the United Kingdom?s membership bid, Charles de Gaulle?s departure and its impact on European integration, the first enlargement (the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark).
3rd Week
The Historical Background of European Integration (1973-1984): Britain?s re-negotiation and referendum on British EU membership, Eurosclerosis, the British budgetary question and reviving European integration.
4th Week
From European Community to European Union (1985-1992): Mediterranean enlargement, the Single European Act, Economic and Monetary Union, German unification, the Maastricht Treaty.
5th Week
The Emergent European Union (1993-1999): The 1995 enlargement, the Amsterdam Treaty, resignation of the Santer Commission.
6th Week
The European Union (2000-2010): Enlargement from fifteen to twenty-seven, Treaty reform: from Nice to Lisbon.
7th Week
Institutional Design of the European Union: The European Commission, The European Council and the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament, the Court of Justice, legislative decision-making, the making of EU budget and political accountability in the EU.
8th Week

Turkey-EU Relations: A short introduction to Turkey-EU relations with reference to the association (i.e. customs union) and the continuing accession process. A brief discussion of the future of Turkey-EU relations.
