RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL PROGRAMME COMPONENTThere is no recommended optional programme component for this course.
COURSE DEFINITIONThis course aims to cover the main political developments and major political events in Turkish political history since the foundation of the so-called the `2nd Republic? following the 1960 military intervention. The course is designed to introduce the complex interrelations between political institutions and influential actors in the light of turbulent developments that Turkish democracy and politics in general have experienced from the 1960s onwards. In so doing, we will elaborate repeated institutionalisation and re-institutionalisation of the Turkish state as well as major outcomes of these processes with a special emphasis on the Turkish experience with democracy. We will focus on reasons, characteristics, processes and outcomes of political confrontations as well as alliances within and between bureaucratic state elites and political parties while taking Turkey?s endeavours to democracy (or democratisation) to the centre.
