LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) meet the basic concepts of political life (politics, ideology, political action, political party, interest group, state, nation, constitution, public policy, human rights, citizenship, globalization etc.)
2) see that all of these concepts can be defined in many different ways and can challenge these different approaches.
3) meet the faultlines of the debate over the question of whether political science is a Science.
4) comprehend that many individual, personal, social, cultural issues, many issues related with our everyday life are indeed political matters and that the sphere of politics is not limited with certain insititions like parliament, political party, ministeries etc.
5) acquire knowledge about the agents of political socialization of individuals.

COURSE DEFINITIONThis is an introductory course which will guide you to develop your understanding of what politics is as a field of academic study. In order to do that, the course is designed in a way to teach basic concepts, themes and theoretical orientations of the field. More specifically, the lectures will cover conceptual and theoretical discussions on and around politics, ideology, government, state, regime, nation, regime and democracy. It is expected that you develop a well-established understanding of these topics and can put forward a critical evaluation and carry out a scholarly discussion on these basic themes of political science at the end of the course. **OYS password: 1092023**
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction to the course and an introduction and to the discipline of political science
2nd Week A discussion on what is 'politics' and conceptualization of related terms such as 'state', 'authority' 'power' and 'legitimacy'. (Shively, pp.1-18, Heywood, pp.1-10 & 81-85)
3rd Week Continuing the discussion from the previous week on politics, power, authority... Also, a discussion on the discipline of political science as an academic field. (Heywood, pp.12-14 (the part on ?rational choice theory? is not included)), (Shively, pp.18-20 (only first two paragraphs on page 20)), (Recommended: Shively, pp.421-428 (Appendix))
4th Week A discussion on what is state. (Shively, pp.49-63 (the part on ?state-building? is not included) & 64-66), (Heywood, pp.56-60 & 109 ('What is a Nation?'))
5th Week A discussion on political regimes and democracy (Heywood, pp.265-269), (Shively, pp.166-171), (Heywood, pp.86-92)
6th Week MIDTERM EXAM - NO CLASS
7th Week Ideologies: An introduction to the concept (Heywood, pp.27-30), (Shively, pp.23-24), (Recommended reading: Heywood, A., Political Ideologies: An Introduction, (related chapter))

10th Week A brief introduction on Feminism, Anarchism, Ecologism and Fascism (Heywood, pp.46-51), (Recommended reading: Heywood, A., Political Ideologies: An Introduction, (related chapters))
11th Week Concluding remarks and a general discussion on what is politics.
