General Information
Medical Genetics is a specialized field in Medicine deals with diagnosis, follow up and treatment of hereditary diseases. Genetics unit was established in Baskent University in 1997, which continues its activities as Department of Medical Genetics as part of Department of Internal Medicine since 2004.
Baskent University Department of Medical Genetics activities can be grouped under the three headings:
Primary application of medical genetics is enabling the preimplantation, prenatal and/or postnatal diagnosis of genetic diseases by clinical and laboratory investigations and risk identification by pedigree analyses.
Education is the second field of activity. The aim of graduate and postgraduate education is giving the basics of Medical Genetics, methods and concepts in Medical Genetics and activities of the Department of Medical Genetics to students of Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Beside this, internship and practical courses opportunities are also available for postgraduate students in the Department of Medical Genetics. And the finally, by the Master in Medical Genetics with Thesis program we provide a training to educate postgraduate level qualified individual who have knowledge about factors that play roles in the pathogenesis of genetic diseases, have ability to use the latest technologies and methods to access information in the field of the Medical Genetics, and have eligible to work in health care institutions and organizations.
Research activity is the third field of activity. We are conducting high quality research projects with the collaboration of different Departments from Baskent University and also other universities in Turkey. The aim of the research projects is to contribute to the understanding of the genetic basis of diseases.
