COURSE DEFINITIONNusic notation.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Basic Concepts: signs, sounds, letters, numbers, syllables, words; notation and transcription.
2nd Week Introduction to letter notation: fundamentals.
3rd Week Letter notation: Ancient Greek, Boethius, Pseudo-Odo and Dasian notations; diastematic-undiastematic notations.
4th Week Letter-Shape notations, neumas, Byzantion neumas.
5th Week Guido d'Arezzo and solmization; staff, notes, rests; mensural notation: tempus, prolatio, modus, longa and brevis, perfectum-imperfectum.
6th Week Guido d'Arezzo and solmization; some important developments up to 19th century notation.
7th Week Grafic notations; modern notation techniques (klavar, equitone, Braille, etc.); tablature notations; org and luth tablatures; mixed systems.
8th Week Midterm.
9th Week Electronic notations; oral notation and mnemonics.
10th Week Notation in Turkish Music; abcad system.
11th Week 17th Century: Ali Ufki notation; 18th Century: Nayi Osman Dede, Kantemiroğlu, Abdülbaki Nasır Dede and Hamparsum systems.
12th Week 19th Century: Western notation in Turkey; 20th Century: adopting wester notation to traditional Turkish music and inventing new signs.
13th Week Different Sysytems in World Music Cultures 1: India
14th Week Different Sysytems in World Music Cultures 2: China, Japan and Korea.
