The developments in 19th century Ottoman music and the leading composers of the period.
COURSE CONTENTS

1st Week
Basic Framework: 19th Century Ottoman culture and music.
2nd Week
Composers, musicianship and performers (singers and instrumentists) in Ottoman music: 'efendi's, 'ağa's, 'bey's, 'paşa's, 'hacı's and 'dede's.
3rd Week
Education and transmission in Ottoman music: "meşk" tradition.
4th Week
Enderun, mehterhane and tekkes as traditional education institutions in Ottoman music.
5th Week
Westernization in 19th Century: expansion of the practice of, notation of and education of the Western music together with Muzıkayı Humayun.
6th Week
The most important composer of 19th Century: İsmail Dede Efendi.
7th Week
An Eample of traditional meşk chain: Dellalzade İsmail Efendi ve Arif (Keçi) Mehmed Ağa.
8th Week
Midterm.
9th Week
An official composer: Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi.
10th Week
Greta composers of "şarkı" (song): Hacı Arif Bey and Şevki Bey.
11th Week
Pioneer composer-theoretician for the comparison makam with tonality: Haşim Bey.
