COURSE DEFINITIONAn introduction to contemporary literary and cultural theories. Particular attention will be paid to the socio-historical contexts in which these theories were produced, and their applicability to both literary and cultural products.

1st Week General introduction: the concept and theory of culture; late nineteenth and early twentieth-century developments in social sciences and linguistics; Saussure?s linguistic theory.
2nd Week Formalist Criticism. The New Criticism.
3rd Week Structuralism and Structuralist Criticism.
4th Week Post-Structuralism and Post-Structuralist (Deconstructive) Criticism.
5th Week Psychoanalytical Criticism
6th Week Midterm Examination I
7th Week The Reception Theory and Reader-Response Criticism.
8th Week Hermeneutic Criticism.
9th Week Feminist Criticism; Marxist Criticism
10th Week Ecocriticism; Cultural Theory and Criticism.
