At the end of this course, the students; 1) Know basic concepts related to immigration and forced immigration. 2) Gain knowledge about how being a refugee and an asylum seeker affects individuals in social and psychological way. 3) Gain knowledge on psychological characteristics of specific risk groups among refugees and asylum seekers such as children, unaccompanied minors, women, LGBTs and older people. 4) Know basic principles utilized in working with refugees. 5) Know basic principles of multiculturalism.

COURSE DEFINITION
The purpose of this course is to give a psychological point of view to students about the asylum seekers and refugees. The related course topics will be handled in the light of multiculturalism approach. The topics that will be covered through the course as follows: Introduction to refugee psychology, basic concepts and status of immigrants, the causes of refugee movements, mental health issues, trauma and coping, effects of stereotype, prejudice and discrimination, development related at-risk groups (children, unaccompanied minors etc), gender roles related at-risk groups (women, LGBTs and the like), health and education issues, social integration and adaptation, basic principles of working with refugees, multiculturalism in practice and research synthesis.
