LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT	At the end of this course, the students; 1) Learn to evaluate the film in its historical-cultural context. 2) Comprehend a film (or movement) by considering its predecessor and sequent (the factors that led to the emergence of the film and the effect of the film on the history of cinema). 3) Gain the ability to associate cinema with world history, movements of thought and individual life.

COURSE DEFINITION	The History of Cinema course is designed for students who want to have a solid background in the field of cinema and who want to associate films with both the period in which they were produced and other theoretical fields. In this context, attention will be drawn to the connection between the movements in the history of cinema, which will be covered in the course. In order to fully understand the periods and movements, sample films about each movement conferred in the course will be shown and discussed. The knowledge they will have after taking the course will also form the basis for the World Cinema History course, which is designed for those who want to deepen their knowledge of cinema.

Discussion of realism and expressionism approaches in cinema in the context of these films. 2nd Week Pioneers of Silent Cinema in U.S.A.: D. W. Griffith, B. Keaton, C. Chaplin, E. Stroheim. 3rd Week Film Screening & Discussion: Gold Rush (C. Chaplin, 1925) 4th Week Sovyet Cinema ve Central Role of Editing. 5th Week Film Screening & Discussion: Battleship Potemkin (S. Eisenstein, 1925) 6th Week The Expressionist Tradition and the Rise of German Cinema 7th Week Film Screening & Discussion: M (F. Lang, 1930). 8th Week Midterm 9th Week Poetic Realism and 30's French Cinema 10th Week Film Screening & Discussion: Grand Illusion (J. Renoir, 1937) 11th Week The Development Process of the American Film Industry: Years of Depression. 12th Week The Development Process of the American Film Industry: Years of Cold War. 13th Week Film Screening & Discussion: Sunset Blvd. (Sunset Blvd, Billy Wilder, 1950). 14th Week Conditions that gave birth to modern cinema.
